United Nations Secretary General António Guterres encouraged political actors in the Venezuelan government and opposition to reactivate dialogue mechanisms to resolve the country's political crisis.

"The mediation channels are indispensable so that the crisis can be solved," Guterres said, adding that they have established contacts with some mediators and representatives of the Vatican in order to resolve the situation in the nation.

In 2016, on the initiative of the National Government, a dialogue table was set up, with the intermediation of former presidents Leonel Fernández, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, Ernesto Samper and Martín Torrijos, as well as representatives of the Vatican and the Union of South American Nations ( Unasur).

Despite the willingness of international mediators and government actors to maintain the dialogue table, representatives of the self-declared Democratic Unity Table declined their participation, alleging that their demands were not met, including the release of political leaders who fomented the violent events in 2014, in which 43 people were killed.

In response to the opposition leader's refusal to participate in the dialogue, Guterres indicated that will persists in his efforts to facilitate mediation.

"We call on the Venezuelan Government and the opposition to commit themselves sincerely to reactivating efforts to engage in a dialogue, especially on critical issues that have already been integrated into the agenda, such as the balance between the different branches of government, electoral calendar, human rights, truth and justice and the socio-economic situation" Guterres told international media through his spokesman, Stephan Dujarric.

In this regard, the UN said that it will continue to monitor events closely and urged political actors to take measures to reduce polarization by creating conditions to face the difficulties facing the country.
