The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro Moros, on behalf of the Venezuelan People and Government, rejects the unusual announcement by the President of the Republic of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, on Friday, March 25th, 2018 on the membership of his country in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) under the category of global partner.

Once more, Venezuela denounces to the international community, the intention of Colombian authorities to use their country for introducing an external military alliance with nuclear capability in Latin America and the Caribbean, based on the defense of hidden foreign interests opposite to the well being of our sovereign peoples, which clearly constitutes a serious threat to our regional peace and stability.

The entire world has witnessed the historical position of Latin America and the Caribbean when duly distancing from NATO’s warmongering policies and actions and from any other army or military organization aiming at resorting to the use of force and the suffering of the peoples in order to impose and guarantee the hegemony of an specific political and economic model.

We exhort the government of the Republic of Colombia to respect and comply with the international obligations to which it has committed as member of regional organizations dedicated to guarantee peace and peaceful settlement of controversies. Amongst these, it is worth highlighting the provisions of the Treaty of Tlatelolco for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean; the CELAC Declaration of Havana declaring Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace; the Declaration of South America as a zone of peace, and the confidence-building and security measures and its procedures approved within the framework of the UNASUR South American Council of Defense. The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela once again reiterates its rejection of any kind of extra-regional threat aiming at intimidating the Latin American and Caribbean Peoples, which are determined to be free and independent, on the basis of the spirit of cooperation, respect of public international law, right to development, right to life, and consequently, the right to live in peace.
