COMUNICADO OFICIAL

MINISTRY OF PEOPLE´S POWER FOR FOREIGN RELATIONS

BOLIVARIAN REPUBLIC OF VENEZUELA

COMMUNIQUÉ

The Ministry of People’s Power for Foreign Relations rejects the new set of declarations made by High Representative and Vice-President of the European Union, Federica Mogherini, on 7 August, in name of the EU Member States. These statements show once again the clear favouritism shown by this body towards a minority sector of the political opposition in Venezuela, as well as the wholesale rejection of the expression of the majority of the population, who continue deciding the destiny of our country in a peaceful and democratic manner.

The European Union seeks to make others believe that the decisions taken by the sovereign body of the National Constituent Assembly (installed with the full power to assume the corresponding constitutional role assigned to it, and which gained its mandate through the historic majority of the heroic Venezuelan people) will reduce the possibility of a “peaceful return to the democratic order”, when in reality, and as is well known, the effect of these decisions has indisputably been the very opposite to those grim predictions.

The European Union contradictorily talks about respect towards the legitimate institutions in our country, while failing to mention the subversive terrorist attack which occurred recently in the Paramacay Barracks, located in Carabobo State; an attack which was immediately put under control by the National Bolivarian Armed Forces. Also ignored are attacks which may have been legitimised by declarations such as those of the European Union, which far from contributing to the peace, end up encouraging and whipping up the most extreme tendencies of the opposition, and justifying, either through actions or omissions, the most violent acts of recent months.

We plead that the EU and its leaders inform themselves in an objective manner about the situation in Venezuela, and acknowledge that a good part of the Venezuelan opposition has decided to register its candidates for the upcoming regional elections set by the Electoral Power, leaving behind the extremist positions which in no way contributed to the prompt solution of our internal situation.

In the face of the differences which may exist as part of the normal functioning of our democracy, the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic contemplates some of the most advanced mechanisms for the peaceful resolution of conflicts, and makes concrete the firm proposal of the Venezuelan Government, which is to insist in dialogue, even in the most difficult of times, as the only way to advance and overcome our differences.

We reiterate our strict adherence to the principles of participatory and protagonist-led democracy, as well as to the respect of human rights and the will to resolve any differences, calling once again on all political actors to participate in a great national dialogue.
